Yes, baseball and the World Series are over for another season, and it's rightfully time to be turning our attention towards more important things... like the Grey Cup, and curling, and next year's social calendar. To that end we are presenting the next in the (recently interrupted) series of monthly Dumont Press photo contests. Here are this month's questions:
- Where and when was this game played?
- Who are the five strapping young athletes in this photo?
- Was Papper safe or out at second?
- Who was playing third base that day?
It's really no fair, as my memory is bad, and I didn't even live that long in Kitchener. However, I do recognize Michael Canavet approaching second... is that Doug Epps attempting to catch the ball as Mike Rohotinsky runs up from the other direction? Who knows who that is in the outfield... Steve Izma or someone I don't even know. The game was clearly played in Kitchener/Waterloo, but I couldn't name the park, unlike other residents and members of the Ducks. Unfair advantage!
ReplyDeleteJohn Dufort... recently retired.
Really Dufort! Your first post on the site and already complaining!
ReplyDelete1. Outside; around 3:30.
ReplyDelete2. Peter Laing, Notes, Papper, Rohotinsky, Willie Mays.
3. Safe, proving the need for video replay.
4. I Don't Know. Who's on first.
Oh heck, that wasn't so hard at all. Not completely correct mind you, but certainly not the forbidding challenge that John was making it out to be, even with all of our collective memory gaps. We'll try to make the next contest easier, but in the meantime, there is still room for additional entries and wild guesses.
ReplyDeleteIt's Columbia field, looking southwest to the road and the lake (below the edge of the field)
ReplyDeletePapper was safe not only at 2nd base but also at 3rd and home. The ball glanced off Notes' glove over to Ken Epps as he rushed in to cover the play. However, Ken in his haste kicked the ball behind Notes where Michael Rohotnsky tripped on it as he was preparing to signal Papper safe at 2nd. The ball zipped directly off Mike Canivet's forhead as he rushed in to participate and bounded further out into right field. Rod Hay anticipated all this from 1st base and rushed out to field the ball while Papper was zooming around 3rd. Rod got to the ball and fired a perfect strike to home plate however the catcher, Ross Taylor, had assumed the play was over with an easy out at 2nd and was off flirting with the scorekeeper. He assumed she and all the other lovely onlookers were laughing at his witticisms, not realizing how much they were enjoying the fine display of athleticism on such a fine summer afternoon in 1973 at the Columbia baseball diamonds. The memory is still fresh even if some of the details are a bit fuzzy.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was Joe Goodman playing on first.
ReplyDeleteJane and Mike's read on the play is most likely correct except for the fact that Notes was not, i repeat, not involved. I particularly like the image of David Pappazian "zooming" around third.
