Well then, since John Dufort feels the photo contests are too hard and inherently unfair, and Ross Taylor feels the blog is mostly just about the bloggers, and inherently narcissistic, we felt it was time to broaden our scope, to reach out to those old colleagues and comrades with whom we've shared a beer or a joint, a story or a particular adventure, or perhaps just a few late night shifts doing paste-up at the shop before headin' over for last call at the Station Hotel. Accordingly, we'd like to share with you an informal, mid-month, don't-have-a-prize-for-it-yet bonus photo contest:
As always, a small sampling of the usual commemorative questions:
- So where was all this situated in time and space?
- Why is everyone looking so serious?
- Who have we got gathered here at such a contemplative moment?
- What was for dinner that evening?
- Who managed to stay up all night tending the campfire till sunrise the next morning?
Remember, you can click on the photo to see an enlarged version. Don't hold back, get those comments and heartfelt remembrances in for the rest of us to validate. Stay warm, be cool!... and when you get a chance, go check out some of Winnie's ideas and suggestions from last month's posting.
It is at Chez Switzman in Bruce Mines 1987 and everyone is watching the final foursome putting out on the last hole at the Switzman Golf and Country Club. Eddie Hale, if he makes his putt, will beat John Dufort by one stroke. What makes it so tense is that everyone knows that Dufort has made it known that if he doesn't win he is going to take his golf clubs and head out to Montreal and he has the only set of clubs . Hence the seriouness of all concerned.
ReplyDeleteIt is the usual crew looking much younger. I recognize Winnie Lang, Dufort, Ken Epps, Steve Izma, Joanie, Hunt, Stoody and Cub. We had goat roasted over an open fire that had been tended by Corbett accompanied by Gerritt Huvers playing low on harp.
Feelin' good was easy when Gerritt played the blues, feelin' good was good enough for me....ooops that's another story.
Notes
Does Notes get credit for knowing the Bruce Mines in 1987 part? Way too easy, since the filenames of the photos are brucemines87_l5.jpg and brucemines87_k5.jpg.
ReplyDeleteThat's an interesting question, Bernadine. Remember though that not everyone can read Geek as well as you can. Some, like myself, are better at reading the winds and the trails, and the lingering scent of the dancing buffalo.
ReplyDeleteWe'll have to see what Notes has to say about this.
Geez Louise Bernadine why pick on me? It was Gabe D who provided the answer to one of his own questions? Maybe he was distracted, and rightly so, by the dancing buffaloes. It's not my fault! I was just following instructions, to paraphrase a popular excuse.
ReplyDeletebison sweethearts, bison....no buffalo on the continent...
ReplyDeleteGood memory Notes.
ReplyDeleteDon't we look all serious in the 2nd photo. Winnie is experiencing a teaching moment in the first and we are intrigued.
David reminded me that it was a conversation about 'life and work and meaning, the numbing effects of work life and the conflict with ideals'. I didn't remember that until jogged... I think I have been on some kind of personal drug my whole life.
My memory is always felt-sense memory and little clarity about the event itself.
Intervention required?
Too late?
Other secret pathologies out there?
xoxo
No buffalo???... No wonder all the buffalo hunters had such a hard time of it in the end! Next you'll be trying to convince us that Running Dog wasn't of canine heritage, or that a Dumont Duck can't quack!
ReplyDeleteHmmm, I don't think I was watching Dufort putt out. He was standing beside me. Cubberley's recollection of the conversational topic matches mine. I look kind of Neanderthal if a younger one. Catherine
