- Who are the five musicians in this photograph?
- When and where did this performance take place?
- Who was the sixth musician joining the band that day, but who, tragically, fell off the stage and missed being in this concert photo?

Reunion rumours rampant as Running Dog retrieves raft of R-words

You'll get your chance... just be patient!
ReplyDeleteI have this photo on the wall in my office to remind me of the wayward life of the "professional" musician
ReplyDeleteI think it's unfair, after all these years have run under the bridge. I don't think anyone in the photo will look at all the same except Curly Boy
ReplyDeleteI also have this photo on the wall of my office. It reminds me not of years running under a bridge, but that I should never grab hold of an electric lackey whilst standing in running water. Or something like that. BTW, did the musician who fell off the stage ever get back up? I remember falling off the stage once, and landing in a lair of militant lesbians. Scarred me for life.
ReplyDeleteDave Papazian was playing with us that day, but I don't remember him falling off stage.
ReplyDeleteI never worked for Dumont, nor am I an offspring of such, but I do have a rather close relationship with a former employee and Running Dog band member, and the picture in question is hanging on the wall of our music room. Does that disqualify me?
ReplyDeleteQuestion 1: Singing his heart out on the left is Nick Savage/Nick Sullivan. Next to him, easily mistaken after all these years for John Lennon, is Rosco Bell. Bruce Steele is between them, but doesn’t show his best side. Displaying the perfect insouciance of the bass player is Phil Elsworthy, and next to him is the man I know only as Roy from Salt Spring Rainbow.
Question 2: This was Running Dog’s penultimate concert, which took place in 1972, just before Nick left on The Canoe Trip (Thanks, Dumont!) It must have been in May, and was somewhere around the university. I just remember a grassy bank and a heady smell.
Question 3: That’s a tough one. Even after extensive grilling and blandishments, Nick claims to not remember , but did think it might have been David Papazian dancing off the stage while playing harmonica. It’s a likely story, at least.
No Sue, you're certainly eligible to enter the contest. It's been tougher than I thought, as Mike Canivet couldn't even find the fifth musician in the photo. Nobody's come close on the date so far... or the exact location...
ReplyDeleteSoon, all will be revealed. Still time for more entries though...
I hope next month's contest is easier.
Now that I take a closer look at the picture, I see that you helpfully wrote the date on it, Gary! As you say, a tough contest - it was all so long ago.
ReplyDeletePapper fell off, Nick Savage, Glen Soulis, Bruce Steel, Phillipe Ellsworthy, Roscoe Bell, Lake Columbia - before my time...
ReplyDeleteRoddy was batting... either Papper or Michael Rohatynsky was catching... ball diamonds at UofW
If you can remember all the dates, etc were you really there?
from Jane and Michael
Running Dog concert took place on Columbia Field. It was Roy Meyer playing electric guitar, and Papper was playing harmonica (not in photo). Date? It was many years ago, maybe 1971.
ReplyDeleteOkay, the Central Blogging Committee has declared that Susan Scott is the winner of the first Dumont Reunion Photo Contest. Several entries came close, but nobody really nailed it down completely. A lovely colour print of the 1994 Dumont Reunion at Bruce Mines will soon be making its way out to Susan, if we can scrape up the postage. And the correct answers:
ReplyDelete1. The five musicians in the photograph are Nick Savage, Bruce Steele, Rosco Bell, Phil Elsworthy and Roy Meyer (on loan for the afternoon from the Saltspring Rainbow Band, the closing act that day).
2. The concert took place at Columbia Field, on the North Campus of the University of Waterloo on a Sunday afternoon in mid-July, 1975 (Steve and Ken and I took off for the west coast the very next day).
3. Missing from the photo was David Papazian (aka Papper), off following his harmonica somewhere.
But wait! There's more! Be sure to check back for the next Dumont Reunion photo contest, coming up in May. The theme: Road Hockey Warriors!
Thanks for doing the contest, Gary. It brought back a lot of great memories. I'm looking forward to seeing the photo, but don't worry about postage. Surely you'll make your way to Victoria again someday, and could just bring it along. I'll need your help to identify everyone in the picture anyway!
